Automating Pagespeed Insights Using Google Sheets [Updated Template]

Table of Contents

In September, Moz published UpBuild’s guest post on “How to Automate Pagespeed Insights For Multiple URLs using Google Sheets”. We got a lot of really excellent questions and feedback on the post, and have continued making tweaks and improvements to the tool, which we thought we’d share here today. I recommend reading the Moz blog post first to give you a good understanding of what to expect from this tool. Then once you’re done, read on below to hear more about the additions we have made based on the feedback we received.

Performance Score and Mobile Results

A large majority of the community requested some additional functionality that was not part of the original Google Sheet, namely the PageSpeed Insights Performance score generated for each page and the ability to run the tool for mobile results (the tool pulls insights for desktop URLs by default).

We’re always happy to hear about ways to make the things we build even better for SEO and so we are happy to announce that we have added these great suggestions to an updated version of the template.

Download the Updated Google Sheet

You can grab an updated copy of the Google Sheet that now includes the Performance Score and the ability to run your URLs through PageSpeed Insights for mobile or desktop results.

Desktop and Mobile Insights

On this updated template, the Settings tab now has the option to choose between Desktop or Mobile. You will want to make sure that this is defined before running the tool. At this time, you can only choose one strategy type, but if you’d like to have insights for both, simply make two copies of the new Google Sheet template.

Why Does PageSpeed Matter So Much in 2025?

Let’s take a step back and look at why we’re even doing this. Page speed has been a core part of Google’s ranking system for years, but after the rollout of Core Web Vitals, things got even more important.

The new version of PageSpeed places even greater emphasis on Core Web Vitals, particularly Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), First Input Delay (FID), and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS). Our new sheet automatically captures all these metrics!

Importance of Performance Score

The Performance Score (now part of our tool) is your website’s report card for speed. It measures from 0-100, and the higher the score, the better:

  • 90-100: Fast (Green)
  • 50-89: Needs Improvement (Orange)
  • 0-49: Slow (Red)

So why is this score so significant? Google incorporates this metric into its algorithm for ranking a website. Our tool now assists you in monitoring this important metric on all your pages simultaneously!

Tips To Use The New Tool

Want to get even more out of our automation tool? Try out these tips:

  • Create a calendar reminder to run the tool every month to monitor progress over time.
  • Sort your results by Performance Score to address the largest issues first.
  • If multiple pages have the same issue, consider revamping the entire website.
  • Enter competitor URLs to compare how your site performs compared to others in your market.
  • Remember, Google’s API imposes daily quotas. So, don’t waste your attempts. Make sure that you recheck only after optimizing the elements.
